BRGR

Burgers, Burgers, Burgers, Burgers…..whither you find them now quite dull or welcome the burger invasion, it would appear that they are here to stay. Believe it or not this is quite a contentious issue amongst the Glasgow Fooderati.

Some say enough! With a new burger place opening what feels like weekly we are good for burgers…there is no room in the city for anymore and with the city expecting 3 (yes THREE) Five Guys in the coming months, A Gourmet Burger, a Handmand Burger and whatever else opens up locally we need no more.

On the other hand there are some that think the more the merrier, more competition from a customer point of view encourages better products and cheaper price (or the great local places being closed down because they can’t compete with the multi million pound companies!!)

Which ever side of the fence you fall on it would appear that Glasgow is sadly definitely the Burger capital of Scotland.

That being said, I was excited on Friday a few weeks ago to treat Pa Geek to a burger for the sterling work he had done that week rewiring my entire flat. Mr Geek and I decided that we would take him along to try newly opened BRGR on Great Western Road. I had heard pretty mixed reviews about this new trendy burger joint and was looking forward to checking it out for myself.

BRGR (Yes I hate the name too) is exactly what you would expect now of a new burger bar – Lots of faux reclaimed style stuff, simple wooden benches, basic tables and on trend lighting. No proper cutlery, kitchen rolls on the tables…you get the idea! It is quite a small space but I think they have used it well, although the tables are pretty crammed in together but in this size of the restaurant they haven’t really had a choice. It is a perfectly pleasant environment and I have no really strong feelings about it.

The service was fantastic, we had a lovely girl as our waitress who was dressed up as a hip hop rapper (i think) for Halloween who was great. She was always on hand if we needed something and was chatty without being in your face. In fact all the staff we spoke to which included a mummy and a skeleton were really friendly.

I am not going to lie after hearing about their boozy milkshakes the first thing I looked at was the drinks menu. In honour of House Of Herby and her unhealthy relationship with Malibu I had to order The Bounty – a vanilla milkshake with a shot of malibu. The drink when it came was a massive serving but I couldn’t taste the Malibu at all because the drink was so big. I asked for a second shot of Malibu which did make it taste slightly more coconut but at £10.50 by the time I got the second shot it was pretty expensive. I probably wouldn’t order another boozy milkshake but I would definitely order one of their normal vanilla milkshake as it did taste great, just not boozy.

The menu consists of the tried and tested burger menu of a selection of Burgers, wings and sides to choose from. I opted to try The Barbie….Ken? which consisted of a beef patty topped with onion rings, smoked onions, pickled cucumber, crisp lettuce, BRGR relish and BBQ Sauce. Oh god where do I start? I really wasn’t into it at all…the patty was quite an odd texture which I didn’t like and I felt quite meh about the taste. I am pretty sure the burgers are bought in rather than made on site, which is a little disappointing. Unfortunately they forgot to add the BBQ sauce and BRGR relish it to my burger which I didn’t realise until I was more or less finished and at that point there seemed little point in asking for any, if I’d realised straight away I would of sent it back. I could taste the pickled cucumber which were nice and added some flavour to my burger. To top this off the burgers was horrendously messy and completely fell apart when we tried to eat them.

The sides on the other hand were all total winners – the sweet potato fries were amongst the best in the city, the mac and cheese was cheesy, gooey and delicious. The onion rings were MASSIVE, tasty and crisp and the roosters fries were really great. I left about half my burger but completely demolished most of the sides we got.

All in all I wouldn’t make a special trip back to BRGR but if I was passing and was hungry I would stop in for something to eat. I would say though that the things I didn’t like about this place were down to personal taste so definitely worth popping in to try  if you were passing and in the mood for a burger.
