I don’t often venture into the city for take away food for lunch, it has to be something which is either exceptionally tempting or something I know is going to blow my socks off. Nic’s NYC Deli on Hope Street do both of these things for me – every time I go in I am nearly always bad and order something calorific. In my weak defence though it is always amazingly tasty and well worth the astronomical calorie count.
When I paid a visit to Hope Street a few weeks ago for Mr G’s lunch I wasn’t planning to pick anything up for myself, needless to say this plan went out the window in spectacular fashion pretty quickly.
Let me set the scene for you…if you have visited their place on St Enoch Square it is very similar to this only larger and with tables. If you have never been in to Nics Deli (why not? what is wrong with you?) it is a cool, but incredibly busy little lunch spot with a wall of cool black and white pictures, a large service counter and a few painted wooden tables dotted around so you can choose to sit in.
Okay! Okay! enough about the decor, lets talk about the food because this little slice of American heaven is a lunch time mecca for me – Hotdogs, Sandwiches, Wraps, Baked Potatoes, Salad Bowls and Taco Bowls crammed full of delicious and imaginative fillings….you can find their full menu here, I would tell you all my favourites but honestly I love them all.
As well as a great choice of savoury options their sweet offerings are off the charts amazing – the donuts are INCREDIBLE, best donuts I have ever tasted, and again with amazing flavours and topping to choose from. Also on offer is a selection of light fluffy american pancakes and waffles with tons of lush flavours to choose from.
Are you getting the impression that i love this place? Because I really really do.
On this particular visit I ordered a foot long cheesy pig dog, which is a hotdog covered in bacon and melted cheese and was exactly as delicious as it sounds….although this is definitely something I need to eat with a fork and knife because it is so big and messy.
For dessert I choose what can only be described as the king of all donuts – a cookies donut sandwich! I’ll give you a moment just to process the thought of a cookie donut sandwich!…….
This is one of their regular freshly baked donuts slathered in fondant and sandwiched between two crunchy but chewy peanut butter cookies, then topped with honeycomb and more fondant – are you speechless? I certainly was when I saw it and I can’t even begin to tell you how epic it tasted, even if it did take me 3 sittings to finish it.
Nics Deli is one of my favourite lunch time spots in G-Town, due to the calorie count I clock up on my visits I tend to keep it as a treat and maybe only visit once a month….but boy the calories are worth it.
