Kelbourne Saint

I feel like I have major Christmas fatigue – I have been jolly, merry and bright now for nearly 6 weeks and I am kinda over it.

However, I did have a brilliantly fun December which I packed to the brim with food/coffee/wine dates with friends. One of my favourite get together was at new Glasgow bar Kelbourne Saint. Where MrG and I met up with some friends the Sunday before Christmas to enjoy a glass of hot buttered rum and a family dinner to toast the ending of another fabulous year.

Located on Queen Margaret Drive, you may know Kelbourne Saint better as the pub in Trainspotting where Begby lobbed the pint glass over his shoulder – It looks a wee bit different now tho. The decor feels modern and stylish, but stills keeping a cosy welcoming pub feel. My favourite feature has to be the sky mural on the ceiling, which was painted by Glasgow’s very own RogueOne.

(Note: I did love the decor and the vibe but I have scored it an 8 stars because a door somewhere kept opening blasting us with freezing air – brrrrr!)

The staff were brilliant, they were extremely welcoming and so helpful. Drinks came quickly and we were checked on regularly to see if we needed anything. I did mention to our waitress at one point how chilly it was and within about 90 seconds we had heaters at our feet to help warm me up…excellent service.

Foodwise, if you don’t like chicken then this may not be the place for you, since their menu is based around their massive rotisserie oven. Actually that is not fair, there are a few non-chicken options but I think if you are going to a rotisserie restaurant you are probably going to want to try the chicken, right?

I kicked off my lunch by ordering the Roasted Arran Pumpkin, Charred Feta, Chimichurri and Courgette starter. It was a beautiful dish – the pumpkin was tender and well roasted, the feta was slightly smokey and crumbly, and the chimichurri was tangy and a bit bitter…it was such a lovely combination. Plus the plate was so pretty and delicate which I always like. I would 100% definitely order this again, and it was probably my dish of the day.

Now when it comes to ordering food my crew always take the attitude ‘go big or go home’ when it comes to food – it’s one of the reasons I love them so much. So after very little encouragement we decided to order 2 whole chickens to share between 6 of us – it was Christmas after all.

The chickens when they arrived were served family style in big serving bowls which I thought was a nice touch. The bowls were full of buttery boiled new potatoes and a nice selection of well roasted veg,  with the moist flavourful carved chicken on top, and oodles of thick chicken gravy on the side. The only downside was the giant yorkies which were a bit dry and on the burnt side so I could have done without them.

For sides we had to order the Chicken Fat Fries which were exactly as foodgasmic as they sound, mega salty and packed with flavour – we all just loved these. I especially liked that you can order the sides in either a single potion serving, or a family portion which means that in a big group you can all get a decent share of them. It’s one of my pet peeves when sides are too small to share properly with your friends so I think this is an excellent idea.

Naturally despite all this food we had to dig into some calorie free christmas desserts – hohoho! And as soon as I saw the dessert menu I couldn’t look past the Maple Bread and Butter Pudding with Maple Vanilla Custard. Oh god how I adore Maple syrup!

I amn’t really 100% sure how to describe this dish other than sweet….very very sweet! The bread and butter pudding was like squished down sweet baked croissant, and the custard was light and creamy which was really interesting – I liked it, it just wasn’t what I was expecting when I saw the words bread and butter pudding.  Would I order this again? Maybe. I would probably order the rice pudding, I got to try a little taste of from MrG choose dessert and it was incredible.

Our bill for 6 people came to £129.60 – for SIX people!!! I think we all more or less had a 3 course meal, so the value for money was absolutely excellent – we were delighted with the price.

All in all I loved the vibe at Kelbourne Saint. It’s relaxed and friendly, the staff are great and the food is scrumptious. This is going to be a big favourite of mine in 2017.
