My Year in Pictures: 2016

When I sat down to write this post I had every intention of writing a 2016 round up but somehow it has turned into a My Year in Pictures post instead. Which is fine because I always enjoy doing my Sunday posts, giving you guys a flavour of what I have been up to the previous week. And I thought I would give this a similar tone…. i.e. less chat more pictures. 🙂

So here is a very brief look at the places I have enjoyed this year……….

First off let’s mention the places that I have discovered for the first time this year in the city and loved – Singl-end where I have enjoyed many a breakfast date with friends, Athena Greek Taverna for tasty traditional Greek food and Guys for modern contemporary Scottish fayre have all been fantastic, and I’m so pleased I finally got round to trying them. For take aways this year I have very much enjoyed discovering Home Wok on Byres Road, Tantrum Donuts and Martha’s – all of which I have massively enjoyed trying out for the first time, and look forward to visiting more in 2017.

And let’s not forget about the new kids on the Glasgow food scene which I have loved welcoming this year – Horn Please for original contemporary Indian tapas, Bread Meats Bread West End for the best burgers in the land, and Spanish Butcher for delicious steaks with a Spanish vibe. Then there is the new look McPhabbs where I always enjoy the modern pub food with a twist, Kelbourne Saint for fabulous rotisserie chicken and other tasty treats, and Wine Bar Villiers & Co for all the delicious cheese and the nicest red wine I’ve ever had. All of these places have made me insanely happy this year and are all now firm favourites of mine.

Then of course all my staples go to restaurants have featured heavily in my year, and I’m sure you guys are more than familiar with my on going love for these guys – Don Costanzos for the best service and no nonsense Italian food in the city, West on the Corner for fantastic modern German inspired bar food, Porter & Rye for one of the best steaks in the city, and of course Roast and Nic’s NYC Deli who always make me insanely happy at lunch times.

I think we can all agree that 2016 has been a fantastic year for the Glasgow food scene, and after hearing about a few new places that are due to open in the new year I certainly have high hopes that 2017 will be even better.

Blog wise this year I have just LOVED adding a few features to GFG in the form of Geek Cake Club, which I promise I will be doing more of in 2017. FoodGeek Cooks? which next year will properly be making its debut. And of course my 40/40 project which I have made a very small start on but will be looking to get some of my list ticked off in the next 12 months.

That aside, I think my favourite blog project for 2016 has been my Geekmas Advent Calendar which had nearly 8000 entries in just 24 days leading up to Christmas….I absolutely loved giving away prizes to all those fab local business that I just adore, and I promise it will be making a return in 2017.

This year hasn’t just been about delicious food, I also started my own clothing business which is exciting. FoodGeek Apparel is a line in slogan tees and sweaters that I love, so much so that I practically live in them now. I am really pleased with how the first few months of the launch have gone and have lots of plans for next year.

So that pretty much in just a few hundred words summed up my year – it’s mostly been all about eating good food with good friends.

I’m not really one for making resolutions for the year ahead, but after losing a very dear family friend who passed away this year suddenly at the age of just 42, more than ever it has driven home how short and fleeting life is. So in 2017 I am going to try to live better, embrace positivity, appreciate more and love stronger.

Have a fabulous 2017 you beautiful bunch, let’s make it a great year full of positivity and joy.
